Optimist sailor Hugo Llwellyn was on track for a great Australian Optimist Nationals campaign for 2014 when illness stuck preventing him from sailing and meaning a long recovery. Hugo was down but not out and came back to win the Victorian Optimist Championship at his home club of Sorrento over the March long weekend. Hugo finished 2nd overall just one point behind overall winner from NSW Jack Littlechild from WSC in Sydney. Hugo sailed a very consistent series reading the shifts well and keeping out of trouble with the jury and the many messy start line incidents caused by the strong tide. Hugo is a past Australian & Victorian Minnow Champion & Australian Optimist Team Member and is now working on a 420 campaign where no doubt we will see him successful once again. 3rd overall in the Vic States was Ben Hinks from SA.
The Victorian Optimists had over 150 boats attend showing how dominant this class is in junior sailing with fleets from Green Fleet, to Intermediate to Open.
