Sail Melbourne wrapped up with some great performance from many competitors. Certainly Tom Slingsby and Nathan Outteridge/Iain Jensen are proving to be the guys to beat in the upcoming Olympics. Surprise package was the performance of Belinda Stowell and Elise Reichichi in the 470 Women. Not surprising really given they are both Olympic Gold Medallists. However Belinda told me they did well in the light to medium airs but will need to work hard to be ready for the big breezes expected in Perth. Oli Tweedell sailed very well to challenge for the gold. Give Oli’s focus is Perth we should see another great performance from him in WA as well and in breezes he is training for. Krystal Weir performed well recovering from a mid regatta poor result to take bronze and prove she is a contender in 2012. Sam Kivell and Max Ryan sailed the wheels of their 470 to take a podium after leading for most of the regatta. Page and Belcher took second in the 470 mens however this a rare non gold performance and they look still very much on track for Gold in Weymouth in 2012. Once again the invited classes were dominated by the 26 boat Optimist fleet and a nine boat Laser 4.7 fleet. This was a great performance given the regatta was in during school time and exams for some. This earlier timing forced down fleets in the Laser Radial Mens, 29er and Cadet. The Olympic hopefuls travel to Perth while the rest of us get back to work and school!
