Who said Queensland is always warm? We decided to stay in a caravan, well actually a pop top which is essentially a caravan in the middle with two tents either end. Apart from great company and fantastic food it was cold for the first 3 days and blew 22-27 knots for day one of the racing. This caused carnage in the form of bent 29er masts, ripped sails etc. However all fleets got a race in bar the Optimist Green Fleet. from then on the weather improved and the sun came out. The regatta was well run with over 200 yachts at the fantastic RQYS in Manly. Sailing Shacks Ben Hartnett started the regatta with a shocking DNF and DNS for the first two heats when he learned how to sail a Laser downwind in 25 knots. However he got it together in the medium to light conditions that followed to finish 4th overall and first boy. Congratulations to Melissa Hitchen-Haw who dominated the event. Interesting to see three ex Opti sailors in the top 4. Sailing Shacks Finn Hartnett and Lachie Hartnett competed in the Optimist Green Fleet of 25 boats. Finn finishing 3rd overall and Lachie 20th in his first regatta.
Big thanks to Mick at PSA for the Lasr charter and Bondy for shipping the Optimists up and back to Qld in record time and Bill and Robyn Philip for awesome catering. Looking forward to 2011. Full results are at http://www.qldyouthweek.com
