Early November saw the Youth Sailing Camp held at Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club. There was a great turn out of boats with 22 Opti’s, 13 Minnows, 10 Sabots and 10 Laser 4.7/Radials. There was a great array of super quality coached such as dual Olympians Sarah Blanck and Buster Hooper and specialist coaches for the Sabot’s Minnows and Optis such as Andre’, David, Micha and Adrian. The weather was windy and sunny on day one and windy and bit wet (but so is sailing!) on day two and three. The focus for this camp was boatspeed and how to change gears. Ben Hartnett sailed our Optimist for the first time with others and had a blast. His favourite part was the series of starts and mini races as a group on day one. He really enjoyed the one on one coaching from Andre’a and being made to hike harder as he found the boat reacted well to the coaching advice. This was a great event with us learning a truckload about to make an Optimist tick. It was also a bonus having the fast Opti sailors such as Lloyd, Melissa etc along to keep everyone motivaed to go faster. In the Opti’s we had sailors from NSW, Qld and Germany attend.
We also had some Opti dads along who are big sailors in their own right such as Grant Wharrington of Maxi yacht skandia Wild Thing fame and Chris Dare who owns the Grand Prix racer “Flirt”.
