The Australian Olympic Sailing Team returned to Melbourne to a rousing reception for the the sailing community at Sandringham Yacht Club on Tuesday 16th September. The team members arranged the reception for late afternoon/early evening so as many school kids into sailing could attend. The event saw 470 Gold Medalists Malcolm Page and Nathan Wilmot and Tess Parkinson and Elise Rechichi, Laser Radial sailor Sarah Blanck, Yngling sailor Krystal Weir, Tornodo Silver Medalist Glenn Asby and coach to the stars Victor Kovalenko. All the team spoke well and encouraged everybody young and old to dream and take action to acheive their dreams. The event was well run by Yachting Australia and opened by YA President Andrew Plympton. Chairman of Selectors John Bertrand was in attendance as was Alistair Murray and Bryn Wellington from team sponsor Ronstan International.
Ben got to meet Kyrstal Weir and show her his Laser 4.7 her old boat which she was happy to see back on the water. She offered Ben any assistance he needed (what about his dad?). Sarah Blanck was happy to see Ben and his brothers Finn and Lachie whom she met at Christmas at the Laser Nationals. Ben and Glenn Ashby met again and Glenn was surprised to know that Ben had helmed an Olympic Tornado. Finn and Lachie got their lifejackets signed and all the team members were generous with their time and autographs for all the kids both small and large who came along. Attached is a pic of Ben with Malcolm Page’s Gold Medal and the boys with the 470 Women Gold Medalists.
