Ben has had a Laser 4.7 for a couple of months now. We purchased the boat from Sorrento where it was lying unloved in a boat yard. On closer inspection the boat turned out to be “Slick As” Olympian Krystal Weirs Australian Radial Laser Championship winning boat from a few years ago. So with a 4.7 rig, new Turbo kit supplied and fitted pre-race by Laser dealer Buster Hooper Ben hopped from Minnow to Laser Sailing. So Ben what’s it like racing a Laser 4.7 compared to the Minnow?
The 4.7 is a great boat. It’s a fantastic boat for kids wanting to step up from a Minnow or an Optimist, the Laser 4.7 also gave me my first ever race down the narrows at Albert Park which was a lot of fun for me. I had noticed the difference with the Laser 4.7 and the Minnow was between gybes because with the Minnow you can just grab the mainsheet and pull the boom across but with the Laser 4.7 you have to tweak the mainsheet right as the boom starts to fly across to the otherside. the Laser 4.7 is a fantastic boat for sailors looking to go fast and have an exhilarating ride.
